



Joan King, violin
Born in Carmel, California, Joan moved to Palo Alto with her parents when she was 7 years
old. There, at the age of 9, she began studying violin. Her teacher was Elizabeth Kincade,
student of Louis Persinger. She was a member of the California Youth Symphony when they
toured Japan in 1963. Joan was enrolled in the conservatory in Mexico in 1967. She won a
position in the Orchestra of the Palace of Fine Arts in 1968, and became a founding member
of the State of Mexico Symphony in 1970. In 1974 she joined Mexico's National Symphony,
and in 1979, she and her family moved to Washington, D.C. She was working as an extra in
the National Symphony, the Beethoven Pops, the Washington Sinfonia, among other groups,
and had just been offered a scholarship to Catholic University, when she and her husband were
invited to play in the Xalapa Symphony, with an offer so good that they couldn't refuse.
In 1980, the family moved back to Mexico, where they stayed until they got a call inviting her husband
to be concertmaster of the Victoria Symphony in Canada, where Joan began to work as an extra,
until she won a permanent position in 1994.
Joan moved to the Vancouver area in 2007 and is now playing with the West Coast Symphony and
the New Westminster Symphony. Currently she is teaching violin at Douglas College. Her
children are now professional orchestra musicians.
Maxwell Ngai, violin
Maxwell Ngai received his AVCM diploma from the Victoria Conservatory of Music and was a
performance major at the University of Victoria. He received a B.Mus from the St. Louis
Conservatory and pursued graduate studies in Baroque violin and pedagogy at Indiana
University. His primary teachers included Stanley Ritchie, Taras Gabora, Paul Kling and
Sydney Humphreys.
Maxwell has performed on CBC Television / Radio and has performed in recitals in the USA,
Canada and Europe. He was Assistant concertmaster of the Prince George Symphony and
has also performed with the Victoria Symphony, The Baroque Orchestre du Montreal, and The
Indiana University Baroque Orchestra.
He currently is a violin instructor at Capilano College and the White Rock School of Music and
Dance.
Calvin Dyck, violin
Calvin started his musical training on the accordion at age 5. His violin training began when
he was 8. Following the completion of his A.R.C.T. in 1981 he went on to study at Biola
University and the University of Southern California where, in 1991, he received his Doctorate
of Musical Arts in Violin Performance.
Calvin has traveled around the world with various musical ensembles and enjoys a wide variety
of engagements, including playing for musicals, weddings, films and recording sessions.
Highlights in his career include performing for the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter
Olympics, playing for Queen Elizabeth, the President of Mexico and the Prime Minister of
Canada. He has performed with Il Divo, Kenny G., the Tragically Hip and Anne Murray.
Currently concertmaster for the Vancouver Island Symphony and the Canada West Chamber
Orchestra, Calvin also teaches at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, directs the Abbotsford
Youth Orchestra and produces the popular variety show "Songs Strings and Steps". Calvin
has released four recordings: Meditation, This Shining Night, One Small Child and The
Dancing Violin. "One Small Child" was nominated for a Shai Award as best Instrumental Album

Manti Poon, violin/ viola
After moving to Vancouver in 1993, Manti Poon furthered his studies in viola performance
under the instruction of David Harding at UBC as a full scholarship student. Since then he has
become a much sought-after musician in British Columbia as a soloist, orchestral musician
and chamber music collaborator. Apart from holding the position of principal violist with the
Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra and the Canada West Chamber Orchestra, he also
performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, the
Vancouver Opera Orchestra and the North Shore Sinfonia, to name a few. Mr. Poon is one of
the founding members of the Classical String Quartet and also performs regularly with the
Vancouver Intercultural Chamber Orchestra as both violinist and violist. Currently Mr. Poon is
teaching at the Vancouver Academy of Music. He is also a faculty instructor at Douglas
College and Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Joel Stobbe, cello
Born and raised in Prince George, Joel Stobbe has received his Artistic Diploma of Music
Performance from the Augsburg Conservatory of Music in Germany, regularly performing as
soloist and with chamber groups in Germany, France and Italy. Upon his return to Canada,
Joel was a founding member of the Borealis String Quartet (2000-2005). He toured with the
quartet, giving performances throughout Canada and the United States, with frequent
broadcasts on radio and television. In addition to regular quartet activities, Joel enjoyed giving
educational concerts and masterclasses to young people from Dawson City to New York City.
Recently Joel has furthered both his teaching and solo careers by taking a position at the
Langley Community Music School. He is the coordinator for advanced programs and program
advisor for the string department at the Langley Community music school. In addition to his
active solo career, Joel enjoys adjudicating and giving masterclasses, and teaching chamber
music. Joel continues to enjoy a life long hobby of wood work as well as automotive restoration.

Ian Hampton, Advisor/ Artistic Director
Ian Hampton's musical career began in the U.K. as a member of the London Symphony
Orchestra and the Academy of St. Martin's in the Fields. He moved to Canada in 1966,
becoming principal cellist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the CBC Radio
Orchestra. He was also cellist of the Purcell String Quartet for twenty years, which, under
the auspices of SFU toured B.C., Canada, and internationally. Latterly he was principal
cellist for the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and Personnel Manager for that orchestra as well
as the CBC Radio Orchestra.
He has been closely associated with the Langley Community Music School for thirty years
where he is Artistic Director Emeritus and a member of the faculty. In 1999, Ian was a
recipient of the B.C. Arts Council award for his extraordinary contribution as a performer,
teacher, and administrator.
Ben Goheen, cello
Ben Goheen has acquired his Masters degree in cello performance from UBC under the
guidance of Eric Wilson. While attending the university, he held the principal cello position for
the symphony's many concerts. He has enjoyed performing with several other symphonies
as well since moving to BC in 2005, including: Vancouver Island Symphony, BC Chamber
Orchestra, Prince George Symphony, Kamploops Symphony and Richmond Symphony.
He also performs with a wide variety of smaller chamber ensembles in the Lower Mainland as
a session player. As a solo performer, he thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to perform with
Ballet de Printemps (for their summer 2007 season tour) as well as for the Sonic Boom
Festival in 2008.
Also, currently entering his fourtheenth year as a teacher, Ben enjoys a full schedule of music
students throughout the week.


Beth Nickel, violin/ viola
Beth Nickel, a violist and violinist, received her Bachelor and Master’s degrees from the
University of British Columbia with a major in viola performance. She was fortunate to study
primarily with Gerald Stanick and also benefited from the instruction of David Harding, Andrew
Dawes, and Eric Wilson. Her early studies were with William van der Sloot in Medicine Hat,
AB. Beth is active as a free-lance violist and plays with many professional organizations in
the Lower Mainland including the Canada West Chamber Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony
Orchestra, North Shore Sinfonia, and the Vancouver Opera Orchestra. She teaches at the
Central Valley Academy of Music in Abbotsford, maintaining a diverse studio of ages and
levels. Beth resides in Abbotsford with her husband Joel and their two children Elijah and
Katie.

Jennifer Moersch, cello
Cellist Jennifer Moersch, born and raised in Vancouver, earned a Bachelor of Music degree
studying with Pamela Highbaugh-Aloni at the University of Victoria and an Artist Diploma
studying with Judith Fraser at the Vancouver Academy of Music. Chamber music has always
been near and dear to Jennifer’s heart. She has been coached by the Lafayette, Miami and
Latino-Americano String Quartets as well as Paul Katz and the late Rostislav Dubinsky.
Jennifer spent five years as cellist of the Vancouver-based Delphinus String Quartet and is
currently a founding member of the Feu Noire String Quartet. Ms. Moersch has participated in
the Kent/Blossom Music Festival, masterclasses at the Banff Centre for the Arts and was
Principal Cellist of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. Jennifer freelances across
Ontario. Ensembles she has played with include the Thunder Bay Symphony, Orchestra
London, Niagara Symphony, National Academy Orchestra and the Talisker Players. While
classically trained, Jennifer enjoys exploring other genres and has recorded with many bands
and singer-songwriters including the Canadian Tenors. Jennifer maintains a private teaching
studio in Toronto.

Bo Peng, cello
Mr. Bo Peng holds a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the University of
North Texas, a Master of Music from the Eastman School of Music, as well as a Performer’s
Diploma from the Indiana University where he studied with distinguished cellist Janos Starker.
Mr. Peng was a two-time winner of the Music Teacher National Association Competitions
(Strings Division); he also won 3rd prize in the International Chamber Music Competition held
by the Czech Radio “Spring of Prague”.
As a soloist and chamber musician, he attended numerous festivals including International
Summer Academy at University Mozarteum (Salzburg, Austria) on the Johann Strauss
Foundation (2002 and 2003), the Banff Summer Festival, and many more.
Mr.Peng toured as a chamber musician performing and teaching in Japan, Shanghai, and
Taiwan. Mr. Peng performed as a featured soloist with many orchestras including Stradivari
Ensemble and the Vancouver Philharmoic Orchestra, performing Dvorak Cello Concerto.
Currently, he teaches at Richmond Music School, Delta Community School of Music, and
Guildford School of Music. Mr. Peng served as the Cello teaching assistant for Mr. Eric Wilson
at UBC from where he was working towards his Doctoral Degree in Cello Performance. He
taught Master Classes in Shanghai, China, Taichung, Taiwan as well as at the University of B.
C. for the Young Artists Experience weeks. He recently joined the music faculty at Kwantlen
Polytechnic University.


Jinhee Park, violin/ viola
A graduate of Simon Fraser University, Jinhee studied violin under the instruction of Calvin
Dyck. Her other important teachers include Sydney Humphreys, Philippe Etter, and Ian
Hampton, former members of the Purcell String Quartet. Currently Jinhee is a violist and a
founding member of Arioso Strings. Her quintet performs regularly at the Vancouver Art
Gallery "Out for Lunch" concert series. She has experience in playing in many professional
orchestras including the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, the Okanagan Symphony
Orchestra, the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, and North Shore Sinfonia. Besides
being a performer, Jinhee is an entrepreneur in concert production and music business
management. She is a founder and producer of the classical concert series, Moment
Musicale. She teaches violin and music theory privately in Surrey and also serves as a
Teaching Assistant at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in music theory.
