Joan King, violinist
Born in Carmel, California, Joan moved to Palo Alto with her parents when she was 7 years
old. There, at the age of 9, she began studying violin. Her teacher was Elizabeth Kincade,
student of Louis Persinger. She was a member of the California Youth Symphony when they
toured Japan in 1963. Joan attended Foothill College and San Jose State before going to
Mexico to enrol in the conservatory there in 1967. She auditioned and won a position in the
Orchestra of the Palace of Fine Arts in 1968, and became a founding member of the State of
Mexico Symphony in 1970. In 1974 she joined Mexico's National Symphony, and in 1979,
she and her family moved to Washington, D.C., to try their luck in the freelance world. She
was working as an extra in the National Symphony, the Beethoven Pops, the Washington
Sinfonia, among other groups, and had just been offered a scholarship to Catholic University, when
she and her husband were invited to play in the Xalapa Symphony, with an offer so good that they
couldn't refuse.
In 1980, the family moved back to Mexico, where they stayed until they got a call inviting her husband
to be concertmaster of the Victoria Symphony in Canada, where Joan began to work as an extra,
until she won a permanent position in 1994.
Joan moved to the Vancouver area in 2007 and is now playing with the West Coast Symphony and
the New Westminster Symphony. Currently she is teaching violin at Douglas College. Her
children are now professional orchestra musicians.
